The voiceless need your Help

MAA was founded by Nicky Todd, and recently registered as a trust with Mrinalini Deshprabhu, who is a passionate supporter, rescuer and advocate of animal welfare. It evolved from Nicky’s private home over the last 20 yrs, and is now the largest sanctuary for dogs in Goa.

As an end of the road for the most maligned and rejected homeless street animals, Nicky takes in the broken, the dying, and special needs dogs that no one else will.

It is also a hospice space for the terminally ill and a rehabilitation centre. All the dogs live together as
one family without cages, pens or separation. She provides them a homely loving environment run to the highest welfare standards.

Activities, therapies, off leash walks, play sessions, grooming, swimming and very high quality home cooked food are part of the daily schedule. She also specialises in physiotherapy for spinal injuries and paralysed dogs and has managed to get so many dogs walking again who were written off or unable to move.

The number of residents is fluid but averages at 200 dogs, 110 cats and 4 cows. Abandoned kittens and puppies are an endless addition. She also rehabilitates abused dogs some of whom are confiscated by authorities and have terrible behavioural problems, and she takes in dogs from other shelters all over Goa who would otherwise be euthanised. MAA also offers senior dogs a retirement home who are too elderly to manage on the street anymore and they arrive often with incontinence, arthritis, cataracts or fully blind, and failing organs. Giving such fragile animals a safe supported space where they are served and nursed for their last months, is for many the first time they have ever experienced love. A large number of the residents have previously been owned and abandoned whether young, injured or old, and thereby have been through severe traumas. Some of their owners have died or committed suicide and the family’s turned them out to the streets. Nicky also has a vast medical experience and takes in virus infected, maggot wounded, skin afflicted, poisoned and all types of injured animals for treatment, who she shelters, medicates and who are later returned back to their location.

Nicky is completely self funding and from a very modest monthly stipend pours her every last penny to support the project. It requires total lifestyle sacrifice, a lockdown life to the home, and a complete shedding of personal consumption patterns. It also means that she herself is working intense 17 hour days and unable to afford many staff. She is truly humbled and honoured by any support gifted to her from the community and pledges every penny will solely be used towards the animals lives, comfort and wellbeing.
